Dear T-Mobile Customer Relations,
My parents have been satisfied customers of T-Mobile since 1996, back when it used to be called Voicestream. They’ve been with you guys for so long because they like your value and service. Every year they’ve stuck with T-Mobile and not once did they ever think about changing cell phone plans.
Throughout the years, my parents got the family plan. At the time, only my brothers were able to get cell phones because I was still too young. But when I finally turned eleven in 2006, I got my first phone ever and my own line was added to the plan.
My favorite phone after my first one was the Blackberry Pearl Flip, which I received two or three years ago. Although I didn’t have any internet service or data plan, I still loved my Blackberry. Unfortunately, when I was eligible for a full discount upgrade this year, I was unable to upgrade to another blackberry phone unless I subscribed to a monthly data plan, which is not affordable for a student like me.
Smart phones, not too long ago, didn’t require data plans to be purchased with it. It doesn’t make sense to me why, only now, the company made it mandatory to get the data plan with the phone. Many of my friends and family had smart phones from the past without the data plan but ever since the new “rule,” quite a few of them never got another smart phone.
I love T-mobile and so do my parents but I feel that you guys should reconsider changing the policy about having to subscribe to a monthly data plan with a smart phone. I feel that you guys should offer a full discount upgrade on smart phones without having to purchase the data plan, just like how it was before 2010.
Sincerely,
Kristen Monico

Pro/Con Subtopic Essay Draft: Family Stress
Teens nowadays get stressed out by everything. 78 percent of teen stress is caused by parents. When members of the family are facing problems or parents pressure their children to do well, teens stress out. Sometimes the stress from families help teens do well in school or other activities. Most of the time however, stress hurts teenagers more than it helps them. Stress caused by family members is bad for teens.
True, too much stress from the family is bad for teenagers however, it can do some good to them. When parents tell stories of their past to their children, it can cause some of the teens to be the same or exact opposite. In short stories about peer pressure, a teenage girl named Ashley explains how she is pressured to do her best and go to a good college. The reason she feels pressured is because her parents didn't graduate from college and she wants to make her parents proud.
On the other hand, teenagers who stress out because of their family can cause a change in health and personality. When parents fight or stress out because of finacial problems, their sons and daughters also stress out and are affected by it as well. When teenagers notice thier parents are stressed out, they start having mood changes or go into depression. In a study based on kids and teens who stress out over their parents stressing out, 33 percent of teens say they feel sad, 43 percent say they are worried, and 38 percent say they feel frustrated. Some teens also become overweight because of stress caused by family members' problems.
The pressure parents put on their children also cause teenagers to stress out. In an article about parental pressure on teen athletes, Joe, a fourteen-year-old boy, loves playing both basketball and football. His parents however, discourage him from playing football and force him to only play basketball. Joe stresses out because he loves playing football but he doesn't want to disappoint his parents. The stress teen athletes get from parents can also cause injuries. When parents push their children to play sports, sometimes teens have overuse injuries on their young bones, which can be a lifelong problem.
Teenagers shouldn't have more stress than they can handle. Stress causes teenagers to change their ways of thinking and of living. Stress causes teens to go into depression. Stress also causes teens to be unhappy and do things they don't want to. In conclusion, teenagers who get stressed out by their parents can be hurt for life.

OR Card Q1

Self-critique:
My quote does an excellent job on capturing the insight of the book I have chosen. My conflict and resolution show my basic understanding of the novel although I should summarize it better. I need to add more graphics and creativity to illustrate my description of the book. My overall layout could be better.

College Essay- Critique Draft
-an experience that has greatly influenced my life
------------------------
Sitting on the rocking chair in the upstairs living room, I stare at the television, not really paying attention to the show. All I here is the voice coming from the phone my mom was holding. "...Florentina has lung cancer. They said she'll have to do surgery and go into Chemotherapy." I recognize the woman's voice, it sounds like my aunty Shirley. "We'll just play by ear and see who will be able to take her to the doctor. Besides that, all we can do now is pray that grandma will get better." Getting up from my chair after my aunty hung up, I turn to see my two brothers, my mom, and my dad look at me. "Grandma will be all right," I say, "I know she will."
A year passed since my family and I found out my dad's mom had lung cancer. She lost almost all her hair so she always had her short, curly, dark brown wig on. She was definitely doing better though. It was Friday and the sun was slowly rising above the mountains. Since it was teacher institue day, I didn't have school. I decided to go with my dad and visit my grandma at her house in Kalihi. As we parked in the narrow driveway, I heard faint crying coming from the house. I jumped out of the car and squeezed my way towards the door.
When I stepped inside, the crying became louder. I looked to my right and saw my grandma lying down on the coach sleeping with her brown wig off. I walked to the room across the entrance and saw my aunty Marilyn with my cousin Zachary, who was screaming his head off. As my aunty turned and realized it was me, she said, "Oh hi Kris! I was just about to wake grandma up to watch Zach because I have to leave for work, but since you and your dad are here, would you mind watching him?" Of course I said I didn't mind, I didn't want to wake my grandma up. When my cousin Zach started to calm down, my aunty left for work.
"Oh boy, he's a handfull," I told my dad. For a two year old, he was extra big and tall, and he was also autistic. Since he barely knew how to talk, he kept throwing tantrums when we didn't get him whatever he was trying to tell us. He would stomp his feet, fall on the ground, try to kick us if we got close, and cry loudly if wanted something. It was amazing my grandma stayed asleep during all the tantrums. Although my grandma was getting better, I knew she was still weak, that's why I was glad my dad and I were there, I thought my grandma deserved a long rest if she had to watch Zach everyday.
Ever since that one day at my grandma's house, I always went back. I wanted to help my grandma take care of Zach, I also wanted to help take care of her. She was still weak, and could only walk short distances. She ate very little and lost a lot of weight. But she was fighting the cancer, she was getting better. She was able to take care of Zach and cook filipinio food. She was able to talk story with others, even though her voice was quiet. My grandma never gave up, she fought the cancer. She influenced me to never give up and to take care of others. Everyday, I still pray for her to get better.

Coming of Age Critique Draft
"Kristen, wake up! C'mon Kris we're leaving soon!"
It was a Friday night and as I woke from my nap, I saw my mom's face and realized she was still shaking me. I shook her off and looked through the window. People were walking in and out of the airport doors. Soon, my parents will be one of those people. I stepped out of the car and pulled out one of the small luggage bags. After a couple minutes, we finish unloading all the bags. It was time to go. As I hugged my mom and dad, my mom said, "Kris, make sure you keep the house clean and make sure you watch your brothers." Hearing that made me laugh a bit because me being the youngest, my mom still wanted me to watch my older brothers. "Bye mom! Bye dad! I love you!" my brother and I yelled as we watched our parents walk through the doors. I hopped back into the car after the security guy told us we had to leave. It was at that moment, sitting in the car on our way back to Mililani, when I first realized that this would be the longest time without my parents at home.
Two weeks. Two whole weeks was how long my parents' trip was. Only a few days past and already the house was getting messy. "No wonder my mom told me to clean the house and watch my brothers," I thought to myself. As I walked into the kitchen, cups, plates, and eating utensils were being piled up in the sink. Cans and bottles were also sitting on the counter waiting to be rinsed and sorted out. My brothers were working and I knew they wouldn't clean up even if I told them to so I went to the sink and got started. After splashing soap and water all over my shirt and kitchen counter, I finally finished with the dishes. My legs were getting tired from standing up to wash dishes for so long but I knew I wasn't done. I grabbed the bottles and cans and held them under the faucet to rinse them. Then I put the bottles in the bin labeled "bottles" and the cans in the bin labeled "cans". Finally, I was done with kitchen chores!
After all that kitchen work, I ran up the stairs and turned to my right. I grabbed all my dirty clothes and walked out my room. Like the dishes, my clothes were starting to pile up in the hamper. Holding my basket of clothes, I walked back to the garage and threw my clothes into the washer. It was my first time washing my own clothes. Since I had no clue what to do, I called up my mom for some help. "Fill the Tide soap up till it reaches the line. Then press delicate and cold/cold on the washing machine. Then hold down the start button till you hear a click," instructed my mom. After doing what my mom said, I went back into the house.
I walked across the room and plopped myself on the couch. My eyes started to close as I thought, "I wouldn't be this tired if my brothers cleaned up after themselves." I knew I wasn't really asleep, I was just resting my eyes. I knew I was awake because I was still aware of the washing machine making loud noises, the clock ticking and the birds singing outside. But I didn't pay attention to the noise, I was deep in thought...
Only a few days passed and I already had lots of chores to do. No doubt it was a long two weeks living with my brothers. I didn't mind though. I realized that some point in my life, I have to stop my bad habits of being sloppy and lazy (like my two brothers). I was becoming more responsible and more independent. I was finally taking initiative in becoming a young adult. The two weeks that my parents were gone were the days when I got a taste of how it might be when living on my own. Someday, I know I will be ready to live on my own.

Pro-Con Formative Assessment
Summary: A U.S. based rights group are telling the Philippines they should reform an anti-abortion law. Many women get abortion using painful methods which lead to suffering and death. Even though the Roman Catholic Church forbid abortion and banned it, women still have illegal abortions no matter the consequences. Women who intentionally get an illegal abortion will face six years imprisonment. Since the law doesn't state any exceptions for having an abortion, no one is able to get it. Even if a pregnant women is a victim of rape or the pregnancy puts a risk to the woman's health, they're still not able to get an abortion. Those who do have illegal abortions and suffer from it will not be able to go to the hospital unless they are dying.

Proposition: The women in the Philippines should not be able to get abortions no matter what. Any human has a right to get a chance to live. Even if the woman was a victim in rape, she should give the baby up for adoption than killing a human life. If the women in the Philippines have an illegal abortion, than they should be sent to prison because it is like murdering a defenseless human baby. The women who suffer for having an abortion should be able to go to the hospital even if they are not dying to make sure they're okay.

Coming of Age Experience
As the bright sun started to fade, my parents pulled up into the airport. I helped them take out their suitcases and set it on the sidewalk. It was time for my parents to leave. My brother and I said our goodbyes quickly to delay them no longer. I hopped back into the car and watched my parents speed walk towards the automatic doors. It was at that moment, when I first realized that this would be the longest time without my parents at home.
Two weeks. Two whole weeks was how long my parents' trip was. It was Sunday, the eighth day of living with my brothers. Only eight days past when I noticed my dirty clothes piling up in the laundry basket, the dishes sitting in the sink and the sticky cans on the kitchen counter. I started with the cans. I rinsed them out with tap water and put it into our recycling bin. Since I was already in the kitchen, I decided to wash the dishes. I washed each plate until it was spotless. Finally, after a long time in front of the sink, I grabbed my school clothes and threw them in the cold water wash. It seemed like a little bit to do but really, it was the most chores I did in one night.
I wouldn't have been so tired if my older brothers weren't busy with work and always too lazy to help me clean up. I felt like I was their 'mom' because I had clean up EVERYTHING for them. I could have just left all the dishes, cans, and other chores for my brothers. But I didn't. I knew my brothers wouldn't do anything and my parents would want me to clean up. So in the end, I had no choice but to clean.
By the time my parents' trip was almost over, I got used to doing everything on my own. I did things I would never do without being told. Like walking my dog, washing clothes, and even vacuuming the house. I became more independent, more responsible, as my parents were gone. I realized over the weeks that I grew up.

Metaphor Poem: Rough Draft
Feisty Lovebird
I am active.
For I love to fly.
Sometimes curiosity takes over me
And I’ll be flying off on an adventure
Singing in the sky.
At the end of my adventure,
You can find me on your porch.
And you will see that I can be playful,
As long as you play along.
Once we are friends,
Nothing should go wrong.
But if you make a bad move,
If you make me mad,
I might just bite at your hand young lad.
But not to worry,
It’s like what I said,
Once we are friends,
Nothing should go wrong.
Because nothing,
Not a bite on the hand,
Can break us apart.
I am a lovebird.
I am active.
For I love to fly.
Sometimes curiosity takes over me
And I’ll be flying off on an adventure
Singing in the sky.
At the end of my adventure,
You can find me on your porch.
And you will see that I can be playful,
As long as you play along.
Once we are friends,
Nothing should go wrong.
But if you make a bad move,
If you make me mad,
I might just bite at your hand young lad.
But not to worry,
It’s like what I said,
Once we are friends,
Nothing should go wrong.
Because nothing,
Not a bite on the hand,
Can break us apart.
I am a lovebird.

Journal # 27
"I'm a bird" because I like to sing, even though I am not that good. Birds are also curious and friendly creatures. Sometimes they will bite when you irritate them or get them jealous/mad.

My Vocabulary History (Journal #25)
Assess your own vocabulary. What are your strong points; what are your weak points when it comes to the trait of Word Choice in your writing and reading?
I look up words on the dictionary to find out what a word I don't know means. When I read books and I come across a word I don't know the meaning of, I reread the sentence and try to find out what it means.
Describe how you have studied vocabulary in the past. What kinds of class activities and assignments have you experienced to work on your word choice?
I studied vocabulary in the past for tests that we had to take. We usually get our vocabulary words from books that we read for English class. We had to make flashcards in English class for vocabulary words we had in 6th grae. We recently made a short video for a brainyflix word.
Describe how you, personally, learn new words. Give a specific example of how you have learned a new word recently.
A few ways I have learned new words is by asking people what some words mean. I also learn new words when I look for synynoms in the dictionary. Another way that I learn new words is from a bunch of flashcards I got from a program called Na'au, where it has vocbulary words with a definition and it shows synynoms and antonyms. A word that I learned recently is 'lackadaisical.' I learned this word one day at soccer practice when my coach said it. It means "lacking life or spirit."
What are your specific vocabulary/word choice goals? How many new words would you like to learn this semester? What will be your evidence that you “own them” and can use them in your speaking and writing?
My goal is to learn new vocabulary words and remember what it means. I want to learn as much words as I can remember this semester so I can use it throughout the rest of high school. I will try to use new words I learn everyday until I can remember it and know how to use it properly in sentences.

New Years
Three, Two, One, BOOM !
It was the last day of the month; the last day of the year. As soon as the bright light shined through my windows, I woke up with this excited feeling in my stomach. I thought to myself, "WOOO! It's party time again!" Even though we just had Christmas parties with everyone, it has been a while since our family had a party at our house, and this time, we'll be starting the new year off at my house. As the men in the house started barbecuing and getting ready for tonight, my mother and I set up the dining table and cleaned up the rest of the house---we did not want to start of the year in a messy house. Time passed and I waited, sitting on my couch for my cousins to arrive. It was around five when I thought, "Finally!" as people started to come. I couldn't wait to eat and pop fireworks. My brother said prayer before we ate dinner and he prayed for all of us to have a great new year. When my cousins and I finished eating, we all went outside to pop fireworks. Tik-tok tik-tok... Before we knew it, it was five minutes before the clock struck midnight. We grabbed all our big fireworks, and set them down in a line, connecting them with the magic whip. When there was two minutes left of 2009, we lit the whip as we watched it work its way to light up all the fireworks we lined up. When the year is finally over, and a new one begins, we always hug each other, families, friends, neighbors; it's was like a tradition. Finally, the count off began... TEN... NINE... EIGHT... SEVEN... SIX... FIVE... FOUR... THREE... TWO... ONE... HAPPY NEW YEAR!
